Selected alumni are invited each year to design the promotional poster for Hot Mess, OCAD University’s annual first-year design exhibition. I collaborated with another designer to create this year’s campaign by translating the exhibition’s chaotic and experimental spirit into a bold visual identity.

Together, we developed the exhibition's promotional materials from concept to print. Deliverables included the final risograph poster, laser-cut stencil artwork, analog print assets, an exhibition process display, and a limited edition of 100 printed posters.

We each developed different poster concepts based on the same creative direction.
My composition was selected as the foundation of the final design.
Together, we expanded it by introducing analog techniques such as spray paint, stamped typography, and handcrafted textures to create a tactile visual language.
We then refined the artwork specifically for risograph printing, ensuring the final poster remained visually consistent while allowing every print to retain its own unique character.
We incorporated the word mess in multiple languages to celebrate OCAD’s
multicultural community and reinforce the idea that every designer experiences
the creative process differently.

One of our biggest challenges was combining multiple production techniques into a cohesive visual system. We intentionally mixed analog and digital processes to reflect the chaotic nature of design itself, creating a poster that felt like a hot mess without becoming one.

One of our biggest challenges was combining multiple production techniques into a cohesive visual system. We intentionally mixed analog and digital processes to reflect the chaotic nature of design itself, creating a poster that felt like a hot mess without becoming one.
To solve this, we established a consistent framework that remained unchanged across every poster, including the grid, color palette, and supporting typography. We then introduced variation through hand-crafted elements such as the title treatment and risograph textures, allowing each print to feel unique while preserving a cohesive identity.
